选举委员会采用常规计票法，以前，都需要通过手工逐一处理150000张投票：检查是否符合所有投票规则；处理和和修正违反规则的投票；最后手动编译所有必要协议，并将它们输入内部数据库。
在以前，这种费时费力的重复性过程要耗费6个月的时间，然后才能公布结果。
如何将半年缩短为1个星期呢？
2007年大选首次采用自动化计票解决方案。规模最大、最权威的集成电子归档与档案数字化解决方案供应商之一IID公司受邀担任该项目的集成商和专家顾问。而它推荐采用ABBYY FlexiCapture作为该项目的数据采集解决方案。
项目之所以选择ABBYY FlexiCapture，缘于多种客观原因。该技术对希腊文字和字体提供最先进的支持，因此可以在最短的时间内处理带有手写复选标记的海量纸质选票，同时尽量减少手工操作。首次成功地处理选票以后，每隔3年都要利用ABBYY数据采集技术实施该项目。
自动化处理过程始于创建特定的选票格式，包括创建新选票及内建规则，后者根据相关机构和区域定义了数据提取和自动验证的方法。这有赖于于特殊的ABBYY FlexiCapture工具，即表单设计和文档定义工具。
每张选票都有特定的表头，其中包含各个机构的代码和条码；规则中规定了每面的叉号数量、组合和特定位置，以便识别各文档的有效性。全部293种不同类型的选票都具有这些特性，其中某些选票列出了多达175位候选人。
系统会从投票箱中取出填好的选票，进行扫描并自动识别选票上的叉号，然后计算结果。如上所述，在发布结果之前，ABBYY FlexiCapture会进行逻辑检查。然后，选举委员会核查和登记结果，最后，系统会自动生成一份报告。
实施自动化处理过程以来，每次选举系统都会处理15万多张选票。
ABBYY FlexiCapture为整合定制阶段和外部模块提供了强大的工具。因此，它得以与技术厅现有的结果采集中心系统无缝连接起来，选举委员会可以通过这个中心系统审核投票结果。
导出结果只需要不到1个小时的时间。但由于还需要进行审批，3个小时后才能公布最后结果，这是先前的结果处理方法所无法比拟的。
结果，IID专家建议使用ABBYY FlexiCapture，这帮助希腊技术协会大大简化和加速了选票处理过程，几乎可以立即公布结果（之前是6个月，现在只需1周）；创建了现代的电子化选举过程；同时当然也达到了最重要的目标：尽量减少虚报选票的可能性。
